This will be an introduction to the history and purpose of heraldry and of the urge to produce a pedigree among the families of Somerset. The items that can be displayed on a coat of arms are precisely controlled, and the status of an individual or family is clearly delineated by those items. The talk will summarise this history in the context of heraldry in the historic county of Somerset to mark 500th anniversary of the Visitation of the College of Arms.
