Burnham Community Centre Somerset Day – Sunday 11th May, 10 am to 4pm
May 11 @ 10:00 - 16:00
This event celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the North Sedgemoor Local History Group and the first viewing of the Bob & Winston Thomas local history archive.
The event will open at 10 o’clock and is free to attend but we do ask for donations to the Community Centre towards their overhead costs in holding this event. We shall also be remembering the life of Ken Hindle.
The exhibition is all about people, places, industries and events. Were any of your family members of sports teams, or in the scouts or employed by any bygone local firms? Did they attend St John’s, St Andrew’s or King Alfred’s schools? We have many photos of people, many named, but could you help us by identifying any of your relatives?
Topics included in the displays:
- Holts Brewery – photos, bottles, casks, and notices.
- Photos, bricks and tiles from the Apex company and the Colthurst & Symons company that occupied the area now known as Apex Park.
- A collection of historic artifacts and photos of the Portishead Radio Station that was situated where Mullholand Drive is now.
- The life of John Gunter of Tregunter.
- Photos of staff and pupils from Burnham & Highbridge schools from Victorian times.
- Photos and artifacts from the World Wars.
- The La Retraite Convent pupils and staff.
- The history of the King Alfred (1610) Sports Centre.
- Photos and artifacts of Burnham and Highbridge Railway showing the line from the Highbridge S&D Station into Burnham.
- There will be a slide show of past and present photos of both towns.
In Room 4 you will be able to see the Bob and Winston Thomas archive. Bob and his father Winston collected items associated with local history and recorded changes to both towns. These included historical photos of many of the main streets of Burnham and Highbridge – maybe you live there now. Also included are microfiche films of local newspapers from 1884 which can be viewed via a reader.
GRADING OF WALKS
Events are graded from 1-4 in difficulty. The grading is found in the event description in the calendar on this page. Keep in mind that a change in weather conditions can make a walk more difficult than anticipated. All walks and activities demand a basic level of fitness, suitable footwear and waterproof clothing.
1 Easy – generally even ground with a few gentle slopes; no special fitness needed. Comfortable footwear required.
2 Moderate – for reasonably fit people, may include unsurfaced rural paths and tracks, moderate slopes, uneven surfaces, steps and stiles. Walking shoes/boots required.
3 Strenuous – for fit, experienced walkers, will include hills, uneven surfaces, tracks and may include muddy terrain. Walking boots and waterproof clothing are essential.
4 Confined spaces – including caves and attics. Locations may be dusty, slippery and dark.
Activity leaders carry out a risk assessment beforehand. Participants are required to provide emergency contact details before taking part in an activity – this information is destroyed by the group leader after the activity has taken place.
